The IE-GuardFlex is the central control unit for 4B’s Distributed Hazard Monitoring Solution (DHMS). Using industrial Ethernet technology, the IE-GuardFlex controller connects to, and monitors multiple machine mounted sensors via 4B's class leading IE-Nodes. The complete IE-GuardFlex system can be configured to support multiple machines, IE-Nodes and sensors, and will interface directly to the machine MCC’s to perform a controlled stop in the event of the detection of a hazardous condition.
The IE-GuardFlex system is typically located within the plant MCC and dust hazard “safe area”. Connection is then made, via industrial Ethernet (CAT6 cabling) to IE-Nodes distributed locally to the monitored machines in the “hazardous area”. Typical machine types would be bucket elevators, enclosed conveyors, open conveyors, chain conveyors, roll stands, etc. The range of 4B hazard monitoring sensors are connected to the local IE-Nodes and monitor for hazardous conditions such as belt slip (SlipSwitch, Milli-Speed), belt misalignment (TouchSwitch, Bulldog), bearing temperature (ADB, Milli-Temp), Vibration (Milli-Vib), blocked chute (Binswitch), etc.
With all IE-Nodes and sensors connected, the plant engineer can start the node search process using the intuitive GUI on the 7” colour touchscreen display. Found nodes can then be configured, and attached sensors allocated to user configured machines.
The system allows for 3 stage ALARM / STOP configuration per sensor. Output relays can be assigned to ALARM and/or STOP conditions per sensor or per machine. In addition, the common ALARM and STOP output relays indicate if there is an alarm or stop condition present on any of the connected sensors.

IE-Node
The Industrial Ethernet Node (IE-NODE) is a remote monitoring interface designed to provide sensor data to PLC’s or other automation and control systems.
Both units can be expanded to 16 sensor inputs with the installation of optional expansion boards.
The IE-NODE operates by reading its sensor inputs and sending processed data when requested by another system (e.g. PLC). The units are equipped with an RJ45 Ethernet socket and supports PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP protocols for easy integration with Siemens, Allen-Bradley Rockwell, Modicon and other PLC’s or automation devices.
The IE-NODE’s network configurator software provides a visual view of all devices on the network. It allows for easy identification of each unit on the network and allows for network settings to be changed as needed.
IE Switch
The Industrial Ethernet Switch is an unmanaged switch with 5x RJ45 Ethernet sockets for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Communications. It is designed to work with 4B’s Industrial Ethernet Nodes (IE-NODEs) or any other devices requiring 10/100 Mbps Ethernet communications. The switch can be used in dust hazardous areas up to Zone 21 (V4) and Zone 22 (V46).
Sensors
Touchswitch™
The Touchswitch is an electro-mechanical limit switch with no moving parts, which detects tracking and misalignment problems on bucket elevators and conveyors. When a belt misaligns or a pulley moves over and contacts the sensor, the built in solid-state electronic circuitry detects the lateral force of the belt or pulley and activates a voltage free solid state relay output. This output signal is used to immediately alarm and ultimately shutdown the machine.
The face of the sensor is made from hardened and annealed stainless steel, not soft brass or aluminium, so wear life is longer when a belt contacts it. The Touchswitch is not affected by dust or material build up and will still work when completely covered by material. An external test wheel allows for quick and simple sensor/system testing. The sensors are usually installed in pairs on opposite sides of the machine. The sensors can be connected directly to a PLC input, or for greater safety, to a central independent monitoring system, such as Watchdog Super Elite, IE-Node or the T500 Hotbus system.
Bulldog
The Bulldog alignment and rip detection switch is an electro-mechanical system designed to detect dangerous misalignment of the conveyor and also detection of belt tear damage. The switch will detect horizontal misalignment of belts when contact is made with the roller, the roller arm will be forced to pivot by the belt activating a switch at 20º to trigger an alarm, and 35º to trigger a shut down procedure of the conveyor. The sensors are usually installed in pairs on opposite sides of the belt.
A steel flexible wire is set below the running conveyor belt approx 20-30mm attached by a rare earth magnet at each end. If the belt is ripped or damaged the wire is pulled away releasing the magnet connection which in turn will activate a switch.
ADB Series Bearing Sensors
The ADB series have been designed to allow the depth of the sensor to be adjustable depending on your application. A number of versions are available with probe lengths of 50, 100, 200 and 300 mm. The sensors screw directly into a bearing housing through a 1/4” BSPT threaded grease zerk. Each sensor is fitted with a grease zerk to allow lubrication of the bearing without the need for removal of the sensor. The ADB series have NTC or PT100 type thermistors which allow for continuous temperature monitoring.
The sensor is supplied with a 3m attached cable and can be connected to a PLC or to a hazard monitoring system, such as 4B’s Watchdog Super Elite, T500 Hotbus Elite or T400 NTC Elite. The connections are not polarity sensitive therefore special connection requirements are eliminated, and the cable can be extended in the field.
Milli-Temp Series Bearing Temperature Sensor
The Milli-Temp series can be used on any application where bearing temperature monitoring is needed. The Milli Temp is a loop powered analogue sensor with a 4-20 mA linear output that is scaled across a temperature range for continuous temperature monitoring.
The sensor has been designed to allow the depth of the probe to be adjustable depending on your application. The sensor screws directly into a bearing housing through the existing grease zerk thread. Each sensor is fitted with a zerk to allow lubrication of the bearing without the need for removal of the sensor. For surface mount applications, a lug style adaptor bolts directly onto a bearing housing, motor, gearbox, or machine casing.
The mounting hole is 9.5mm from the factory, but can be drilled up to 12.5mm if needed.
The sensor is supplied with a 3m cable. The connections are not polarity sensitive therefore special connection requirements are eliminated, and the cable can be extended in the field.
M3003, M3008 & M3007 Slipswitch
The M300 Slipswitch is an easy-to-use inductive proximity shaft speed monitoring device with an adjustable 0 - 30 second start-up delay, all housed in a 30 mm diameter moulded body. The self-contained unit has a single set point, which signals when the shaft speed has dropped by 20% of normal running speed. It is used for detecting dangerous slow down and underspeed conditions on conveyors, bucket elevators, air locks, mixers, fans, grinders and many other machines.
No connection is necessary between the sensor and the equipment being monitored. The proximity sensor detects a stud or bolt mounted on a shaft, or other suitable target. Ideally, the target should be of ferrous metal, but non-ferrous metal will be detected at a shorter range. Maximum range of ferrous targets is 8 mm (5/16”) and for non-ferrous targets is 5 mm (6/16”), assuming a 20 mm (3/4”) diameter target. Smaller targets may be used but operating distances will be reduced.
Milli-Speed Switch
The Milli-Speed Sensor has a 4-20 mA output proportional to calibrated speed, it is designed to allow detection of belt slip & underspeed, stop motion, low speed or zero speed on bucket elevators, conveyors, airlocks, mixers, fans, grinders and many other rotating machines. Totally sealed and simple to calibrate, the Milli-Speed works in the harshest of conditions.
An inductive sensing device located in the nose of the Milli-Speed enclosure will detect a metal target. This target can be an existing bolt head or device attached to a shaft, such as 4B’s Whirligig® sensor mount. During installation, the Milli-Speed is set to the normal running RPM by simple magnetic calibration.
M800 Speed Switch
The M800 Elite Speed Switch is designed to detect belt slip, belt underspeed, stop motion, low speed or zero speed on bucket elevators, conveyors, airlocks, mixers, fans, grinders and many other rotating machines. Totally sealed and simple to calibrate, the M800 Elite works in the harshest of conditions.
An inductive sensing device located in the nose of the M800 Elite enclosure will detect a metal target. This target can be an existing bolt head or device attached to a shaft. During installation the M800 Elite is set to the normal machine shaft RPM by calibrating with the magnet provided. The internal microprocessor sets the alarm and shutdown relays.
P3003 & P3004 - 30mm Inductive Sensor
Detects the presence or absence of materials. Is used for monitoring the speed of machinery via a speed module or PLC.
P800 Proxswitch
The P800 Proxswitch is an inductive sensor designed to detect shaft speed, shaft position, gate position, or object presence.
VIBMIL - Milli-VIB & Milli-Con
VIBMIL is a vibration sensor designed for continuous monitoring of vibration levels in industrial environments. It is current loop powered accelerometer and delivers accurate vibration RMS velocity using a 4-20 mA output. Built with a stainless-steel enclosure, including a 3/4” NPT thread for conduit connection. The VIBMIL can be supplied with optional inbuilt NTC or PT100 temperature sensors (Milli-Con version).
The VIBMIL is equipped with female 1/4”-28 UNF female mounting thread, allowing the use of a screw, stud, or mounting stud to secure the sensor to the desired application.
The sensor is supplied with a 1/4”-28 UNF set screw as standard. Optional converters to M8 and M6 male threads are available.
To achieve maximum sensitivity, mount the sensor vertically along the Y-axis of the machinery.
To ensure accurate readings and proper functioning of the VIBMIL, securely fix it to a level surface during installation.
Implement the 2 wire, loop powered accelerometer into the desired control system and measure the linearised output from 4 – 20mA proportional to the sensors measuring range.
